It's a Hemp Life!

The amazing hemp plant and it's incredible bounty of uses continues to fascinate, raise debate and inspire innovation.  With a trend toward sustainability, natural health and eco conscious consumerism, Hemp offers practical solutions to carry us through to an alternative way of living and doing business.

The Cannabis plant as a whole with its multitude of cultivars can produce an array of end products and natural solutions for everything that is important to sustainable growth, both environmentally and economically.

For example:-

* Natural medicine with no toxic side effects.  There have been thousands of trials into the effectiveness of cannabinoids and human health.  With benefits for cancer patients and those suffering chronic disease cannabis/hemp should once again be part of a 'healthy' health care system.

* Personal care products - Hemp seed oil is one of the best vegetable oils to base skin care products on. This naturally compatible oil penetrates deep into the lower layers of the skin, hydrating and nourishing the skin.  Hemp seed oil is perfect for compromised skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, Acne prone skin and general dry, cracked, aging skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties and nutritional profile.

* Health food options - This small seed packs a huge punch, it consists of a range of vitamins and minerals, healthy fats and antioxidants – including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulphur and iron, and vitamins A, B, C, D and E.   With the perfect balance of Omega 3, 6 & 9 it is one of the finest foods for cardiovascular health and clarity of mind.

* Paper products.  We all know the devastation caused through deforestation for paper and building materials.  Hemp is the perfect, sustainable crop producing high quality paper with no cost to the environment.  Hemp crops supress weeds, improve soil conditions and are an effective carbon sink.  Yields can be harvested after 4 months as opposed to tree farming which can take up to 20 years.  Leave the trees for the next generations.

* Building materials - Hemp housing is such an exciting arena.  With carbon neutral homes that are fire retardant, termite resistant and breathable (mould resistant), hemp homes are not only aesthetically beautiful but also environmentally sound.

* Bio fuels - with our reliance of fossil fuels reaching its peak the need for alternative energy systems and clean fuel is evident.  Hemp crops can produce biodiesel which has shown to have a high efficiency of conversion – 97 percent of the hemp oil can be converted to biodiesel.

The plant’s ability to grow in infertile soils also reduces the need to grow it on primary croplands, which can then be reserved for growing food.

Obviously there are many, many more uses of the Hemp plant that we could highlight and I am constantly inspired by the re- emergence of potential this gift from nature offers.   Let's hope the inspiration and innovation continues with the support of forward thinking leaders willing to let go of old ways of doing business.  It's time to embrace the herb fully.

Blessings, Teresa
